Kiyla Brooks hits winning basket for Lady Jets
Jackson College Women’s Basketball team received a huge confidence builder with a 67-65 win over the 13th ranked Schoolcraft Ocelots Wednesday night. Coach Heather Brown simply called it “a good win”. Despite a 14-5 record going into Wednesday night’s contest, the lady Jets had dominated their weaker opponents while playing less than their potential against quality teams. Losses to St. Clair Community College 72-61 and Lansing Community College 59-40 did come with a depleted roster due to key injuries. However, Wednesday night was an indication of their energy and fire power defeating a solid Schoolcraft team. The Jets jump out early outscoring their ranked opponent 17-7, but the Ocelots fought back and the second quarter pretty much even with Schoolcraft taking a 38-35 halftime advantage. With some halftime adjustments, Coach Brown saw her three guard lineup pay dividends as Michelle McGee, Kaylona Butler and Kiyla Brooks took over. McGee, in perhaps her finest all-around game, played 40 minutes, scored 29 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and five steals. Butler added 15 points, Brooks, who contributed 10 points, all came at crucial moments, including the go-ahead basket with 12 seconds to play. The win snapped Schoolcraft’s 5 game winning streak and was Jackson’s 3rd straight. Jackson plays next at home Feb 1 (1:00pm) versus Macomb Community College
